Hi,
where do you obtain 3PAR OS and SP upgrade instructions documents from? Are they publicly available?
I'm looking for 3PAR OS 3.1.3 and SP 4.2 upgrade instructions in particular (not the upgrade pre-planning guide document).
Thanks,

3PAR OS and SP Upgrade Instructions
Re: 3PAR OS and SP Upgrade Instructions
Hi,
I'm not sure of the direct answer, but given 3.1.3 is a controlled release and you cannot obtain it without HP performing the upgrade for you, it's unlikely that any upgrade guide will be of use.

Re: 3PAR OS and SP Upgrade Instructions
I regularly check
http://h20565.www2.hp.com/portal/site/h ... cachetoken
as this seems to be the one place where you can get all 3PAR-related documents that are freely available. If anybody knows a better place: please tell me!
Update instructions are often included in the release notes. We got additional pdfs in the planning phase of an update, but I don't know if those can be downloaded anywhere else.

When all else fails, read the instructions.
Re: 3PAR OS and SP Upgrade Instructions
Hm, I was under the impression that folks here do their own upgrades.
So if 3.1.3 is controlled release, then what about e.g. 3.1.2 mu3, how did you obtain upgrade docs for this version? Or is it always HP who performs the upgrades?
And is 3.1.3 ever going to move from being a controlled release to a regular one, which everyone can download and install? I currently don't have the option of downloading 3.1.3 with my SAID.

Re: 3PAR OS and SP Upgrade Instructions
3.1.3 I believe comes out of controlled release this week, unless they found some issues. I just contact HP support who then routes the request to the team that does the upgrades. We also go through our TAM.
Re: 3PAR OS and SP Upgrade Instructions
According to the "HP 3PAR OS upgrade" technical white paper, from 3.1.3 and onwards customers will be allowed to perform SP and OS updates, so hopefully all the documentation will be publicly available after 3.1.3 release.

I agree they need to do that, but hell no for me, considering all the minor issues we have had, and recent major issue.

Re: 3PAR OS and SP Upgrade Instructions
Our 7400-2 is getting a update to 3.1.3 right now. Watching what the tech is doing this isn't something you would want to do yourself.
So far the procedure has been
Put the InServ into maint. mode (in the SP)
Update the SP (You feed it an ISO)
Upload the InformOS upgrade and patch via the SP web interface.
SSH the SP and run a bunch of wonky commands to load the OS/Patch into the SP
Remove/Readd the InServ to the SP
Run a bunch of health checks
Suspend all scheduled tasks
Upgrade Node 0 and Node 1
SSH into Node 0 and run a .sh script that he loaded into it
Resume all scheduled tasks
Install P01 (no reboot on the nodes)
Upgrade firmware on drive cage (~40 minutes for 6 cages)
Edit: Just got done. The firmware upgrade was the last thing.

Re: 3PAR OS and SP Upgrade Instructions
Not sure why they removed and re-added the nodes to the SP, can't see the reason for doing that personally.
It's months has as it seems tbh, although I normally end up doing it on non-production ready boxes as I'm installing them so I don't care as much about data loss then as there's no data to lose.
The firmware update on the drive catches caught me out though as there's no prompt to do this and it doesn't do it automatically, you need to set this off via a command, which I've forgotten now

Yeah I can't see what would have happened there. I haven't seen the 3.1.3 upgrade in person, but I've seen several prior and never seen this.
And assuming nothing was broken, removing and re-adding should leave it in the same state it started. I wonder if this was just a tech's way of ticking a box that said "make sure the SP is connected to the SAN" or something?
