new 7400

Post by mohuddle »

Looking at the new 7400, I'm a bit confused at the Software Suites available. With a base 'as-is' 3Par 7400 config, would VMware users be able to use technologies like SnapProtect/IntelliSnap to backup their VMs without purchasing the Application SW Suite for VMware?

Probably a question for Commvault, but assuming they support 3PAR snapshots natively then you shouldn't need application suit / recovery manager. The 3PAR recovery managers are standalone products, but they can also optionally be combined with other backup products to provide 3PAR integration where it isn't available. If hardware based snaps are to be used then you'll need the virtual copy license. In the case of MS apps the VSS provider is part of the base OS.

You do not need RM-V from 3par to use Snap Protect. I do not recall how 3par does licensing, but as long as you can create 3par snapshots you can use Snap Protect. depending on the number of VMs and datastores you have and whic version of Commvault you are on there are several limitations with Snap Protect. V10 is supposedly better, but we gave up on V9 too many restrictions and limitations.
