Number of Volumes on a CPG

Post by JoJoGabor »

Just read in the guide that a CPG can have up to 64 volumes but it is not recommended to have more than 32. My client is running 69 off one CPG!!!!

What's the impact of having more than 32 volumes? This seems quite low to me. Is it not best practice to have only a few CPGs with as amany spindles as possible in those?

The limit is not 64 volumes.

A Common Provisioning Group (CPG) creates a virtual pool of logical disks that allows up to
4,095 virtual volumes to share the CPG's resources and allocates space on demand

The impact of having many volumes in a CPG is that it will take ages to tune it if you ever need to do that.

So its preferred to have many CPG's instead of one big one.

That was changed between inserv version 2.24 and 2.3. For 2.24 and older the 32 VV per CPG recommendation is valid.

You can have 1, or 20, cpgs with access to every spindle in the system. CPGs are not like raid groups.
Multiple cpgs can use the same spindle.

Hello

Every time you have a question about a configuration and you need to know if it is supported or not, please refer to the latest version of the Config Matrix.

I don't give you any figure because I don't know anything about your system.

Some configs out of the Config Matrix may work, but it's recommended to avoid them if you can.

What are best practices for 3.1.1 considering max number of CPG's on a 3PAR P10000 and max number of virtual volumes per CPG ?
