who/what/when/why is defrag running?

Noticed this user sys:3parsys has kicked off a defrag on the same LUN three times today.

Does the system automatically determine which LUN *needs* this defrag?

Yes the system will periodically defrag space in order to grow space into or return contiguous free regions back to the CPG. It's a system task and will start, be deferred and restart periodically.
