Spam

Post by Richard Siemers »

We've been getting a bit of it lately. It appears to be all coming from India IP addresses.

I'm looking into tightening down the human check question for registering... Today its a simple math problem requiring a human to read numbers spelled out in english and supply the answer. I am thinking of kicking that up a notch to asking a HP storage related question that could be universally answered by new, potential, and existing 3PAR customers easily... anyone have any ideas?

It's a difficult one. People get upset by Captchas but the facts are they do work. Nothing however will address a person happy to manually type things out. A storage question would be an interesting one because people interested in diet and Xboxs are likely to have a very hard time finding the correct answer.

Have you looked at Akismet?

Hi,

I would say it would have to be a trick question, one which does not return the answer when searched . Such as 'what is the maximum number of disks a 3par fabric can hold' to someone who *gets* stuff will look at that and realise that the question doesn't even make sense but to an untrained person it may seem legit..

Some method in the madness ??

I think it needs to be kept really simple so even new guy can get access to the forum. Something like what is RAID? Yes it could be googled but at least it provides an extra barrier to put people off and ensures new people can access the site.

I went with: "What category best describes HP 3PAR? (match case please)" The listed some basic computer categories like RAM, CPU, Network etc etc... seems to be working. =)
