7450 comes with one ssd as a spare??

Post by mujzeptu »

I just setup a new 7450 array and noticed 11% of the capacity was already allocated? I started digging around and noticed it is primarily allocated to a spare disk? We have a P10400 array and it uses no spares as it was my understanding this is the wide striping and chunklet advantage of the 3PAR architecture..... so, what changed in the 7450?

Not a spare disk, spare chunklets. Unless you're literally seeing one disk with 100% reserved spare chunklets.

Spare Chunklets are allocated on each disk when they are entered into the system, so you will see some space reserved for spares straight away.

If you want to look exactly what is using your space I would look in the GUI under systems>select SAN name>capacity. You can drill down in here to see exactly how space is allocated.

You can see a similar view from the command line showsys - space, although I think the GUI shows the information better.

My bad, it is indeed spare chunklets. I was just caught off-guard because I have so few SSDs that seeing so much of them eaten up for a spare threw me off guard.

Sorry for the dumb question.
