3PAR drives licensing

Post by elnurrr »

Good day, everyone.
Say, I have 7200 with 24 drives installed and I'd like to add another shelf with 8 more drives.
As far as I know there is no need for a license if I use 3 PAR with only 8 drive.
But what about my situation? Will I be able to use my new shelf with only 8 drives installed without license?

Its controller wide, not shelf/cage wide.

The 7200 can cap licences (for o/s and each feature enabled) at 48 drives (licence to cap) - though you still pay hardware support charges on drives above that - but you will need to buy 8 of each licence you already have (+ support charges for them) in addition to the 24 licences you already have.

You should also really "balance" the array - if you have 24 drives in the one controller shelf (e.g. its full) then you should really either add 24 more (identical) drives to the 2nd shelf or add in 8 new drives (which are the same as 8 of the drives in the original shelf) and move (under hp control) 8 of the original drives to the 2nd shelf/cage - so the contents, types, numbers, slots (from the left only - no gaps) are identical. This will give you best performance.

The licensing for 3 Par is essentially spindle based, you can read more about it on pages 46-47 of the 3Par Software QuickSpecs document:

http://www8.hp.com/h20195/v2/GetDocumen ... =c04199812

You can see how many disks you are currently licenced for by entering showlicense in the CLI

I suspect you were asking if you could use the first 8 drives per add-on shelf without additional licenses? That's going to be a no, you will need to get licenses with those 8 new drives... but how many line items you need to need to order isn't as important as how much you can negotiate down the total cost that really matters =)
