HP 3PAR 7200 Relocation procedure required.

Post by deepak.3a »

Hi Guys,
We have a planned movement of HP 3AR 7200 from one DC to new DC. Current 3PAR is with one Expansion enclosure (M6710) and system is having 40*450 SAS 10K drives and 8*200GB SSD Disk.
For the deinstallation and installation what steps need to take and precaution to ensure nothing is wrong on the system after relocation.
Please share the thoughts.

I'd say this is fairly straightforward.

I am presuming you have a physical service processor.

Firstly I would run a healthcheck on the system to make sure everything is good before you start.

Next make a notes of the cabling at the rear and label everything.

Now you should shut down all servers using the SAN so there is no io on the San.

Then you should enable maintenance mode on the inserv using the SP for the length of time it's going to take.

Then I would log into the SP and shut down the inserv nodes (halt them).

Once they are down I would then shut down the SP and the switches.

Power everything off and remove the cables.

Unrack the kit and move it to the new location.

Rack it all back up again.

Cable it as it was before (probably good to take a photo before moving it too to compare)

Power up the switches and disk shelves, once they are settled, power up the controllers, then the SP. Finally the server hosts.

I would then check the San and SP to make sure they look good, can see the servers etc. run the healthcheck again to confirm this.

I would then disable maintenance mode (if it hasn't already expired) and start bringing the vms online.

Finally I would contact hp to make sure the location of the array is changed so that any future support cases send parts to the right site.

I'm sure I will have missed something, and someone will elaborate, but it's a start.

I second everything david said.

The key with relocating anything is document document document.

Take your time, be careful, take lots of notes and pictures.

Prior to the hp acquisition 3par used to suggest removing the drives and packing them individually. I would not suggest doing that as it opens up the possibility of errors. Leave the nodes and drives in their enclosures.

Just document and be careful, and follow David's instructions

For transport consider a roadie rack, they are quarter height racks on casters with a protective shell.

I'd definitely agree with this. It's one thing to document every single cable.

I recommend a Visio diagram of each node/shelf that shows where the cables go.

But accurately keeping track of every HDD and node is just asking for problems.
