Fixing incorrect cabling

Post by Yanix »

We have recently added first additional enclosure to our 7200 system, but for some reason it was incorrectly cabled by HP guy. He cabled it DP-1 port on the controller to DP-1 on the enclosure, while the cabling manual suggests DP-2 to DP-1 for first additional enclosure. Naturally in the system it now shows this

Am I correct that with this setup i'm theoretically loosing speed due to unbalanced port load? Is it possible to fix the cabling issue without shutting down the system?

If it were me I would be nervous about doing it at all, let alone online, but I'm conservative in that respect.

Perhaps a call to hp for some advice is in order?

Did he cable dp2 on node 1, or dp1 on both nodes?

I personally don't think it will have any bearing on the performance until you come to add another disk shelf, then you'd need to correct the cabling to add it.

If one is correct and the other not, I'd just change the one that's wrong, could possibly even do it online, but a system shutdown would obviously be less risky.

It was cabled to DP-1 on both nodes. I ended up calling him back, as there was no actual data on the new shelf yet (showpd indicated no used chunklets, still slowly moving them from uninit to free) we decided to reconnect it online one-by-one with 30 sec pause in between. It went almost well - new enclosure was immideatly visible as commected on DP-2 with normal status. But the cage0 (built-in into controllers enclosure) got degraded status - "loop degraded" and one of the ports "down due to error during discovery". This was a little scary, but he quickly fixed it by resetting the offending port and there were no impact on our servers. So now its all ok - cages evenly distributed on ports and tunesys running...
