HP 3PAR Management Plug-In for vCenter - requirements

Post by qbas81 »

Hi,

I'm new to 3PAR -I'm glad I've found this forum as there is a lot of very interesting information.

I've a question about HP 3PAR Management Plug-In for vCenter Software
can this software be installed on one server together with vCenter?

HP 'recommends' to install it on 'standalone server' (that's what they included in design document for 3PAR installation) - but it is not clear to me if it a hard requirement or recommendation only.

Have anyone used this software and can share some experience (and point me to relevant documentation if possible - so far I could not find more details about it's requirements) ?

Cheers!

Now I am confused as they have the HP Insight plug-in that works across all HP storage and then RM-V, I am not sure what this is, unless it is the predecessor to HP Insight plugin.

Think that's the original 3PAR plugin that's bundled with the Recover Manager, but I don't think you need the RM license to use just the basic plugin. There's at least 2 other options for similar things from post HP, each with other benefits but we've not really played with them (we have separate teams for Storage and VMware management but we share an office so not hard to cross platform manage when required :) ).

My account team is getting clarification, but they think the 3par is the older 3par specific one. The latest HP Insight Control Panel plugin comes bundled with RM-V and support all HP block storage and servers and can install with or without RM-V.

Ok, that's something :)

Do you know if there is any limitation to install "HP Insight Control Panel plugin" on same machine where vCenter is installed ?

I have it installed on the vcenter system. Still struggling through it though, it seems a bit quirky, takes forever to load, hangs up and crashes on one of my vcenters. The other has install issues. Seems like the integration with vcneter can use some work and the back end seems quirky.

Thanks for sharing your experience!

I'm bit afraid now to install it together with vCenter as it looks like 3PAR plugin is not very stable - I don't want to be forced to, for example, reboot vCenter because of issues with plugin...

The plugin is flaky but we have not seen any negative impact to vcenter. One of our vcenters the web interface became unresponsive after installing the HP plugin, but honestly it may have been that way before we installed as we find the vcenter web interface to be less than stable as well. These poorly written java web apps are just awful.
