Seems absolutely ridiculous. What would you do if someone clicked a wrong digit and put a retention on for a year or so, by accident, for snap-shotting a volume-set? You are telling me that you would potentially be stuck with a whole heap of snapshots you are unable to do anything about on your own system?!
What if you had a legal case for having to get rid of that data?
If this truly is the case, we will not purchase another 3Par again, and will probably just move everything fully into the cloud.
Default the max retention time is like 14 days or so. You need to change a system parameter to change that.
As for legal matters, what about the opposite where you have a legal demand to keep something for X amount of days/week. Unless you can set retention time (and that isn’t oberwritable/changable after it is set) you can’t do that. If the most common use case, SLA.
Same for tapes as well.... and any other array I know that supports this. Don’t demo on production systems
Retention time is retention time. You set it to make absolutely sure that no one (even with access) accidentially deletes something that really needs to stay there.
