I have replace a failed drive on my 3par. Started the servicemag start, replace the drive then servicemag resume. Resume failed because the new disk is smaller than replaced. But the new disk has a new ID and is giving me a normal status.

Will I just continue on doing a dismiss on the old ID? since it has a new one and has a normal status?

Or Ill return the failed drive, do a servicemag start again?

Replacing a big drive with a smaller drive doesn't fly with servicemag. The replacement will always get a new PDID but it sounds to me that your new drive has been admitted to the system as an upgrade and not as a replacement for the failed drive.

Do a showpd -c to check if any spare chunklets are still used.

Also is the new disk actually smaller then the old one?

If they are both the same spec/size then it might just be a change of model/revision and the new drive could just have a slightly smaller number of sectors which meant the 3PAR can't recreate the exact number of chunklets as the old one (like maybe one less).
We've seen this a few times, if this is the case then you can tell servicemag to ignore this issue and just continue with the rebuild (with the -partial option).

But yeah if one was 600GB and the other 900GB you'll want to replace it again. :)

Hello MammaGutt, OK, fail, Free in spare chunklets are 0 so I think there is no spare

Hello ailean, both are on the same size but our 3par sees the new disk as less space.

Hello MammaGutt and ailean,

Appreciate your help here. My issue has been fixed with the -partial option, telling the 3par to ignore the issue. Also before -partial option work, I have to make sure that there are no spare chunklet being. I did this by moving the spare. Learned a lot from the both of you. Thanks again!
