What do you think guys about moving 96 disks from one V800 to another V800? Is it doable in a decent period of time and without risks?
Thanks,
mugurs

Hi,

should the data remain on the disks?

Best regards,
Patrick

No. They have data on them because all the FC CPGs are spread on all FC disks in the array and because of this reason they have to be moved without any data.

thanks,
mugurs

There is definitely risk involved, and a careful plan is needed to mitigate the risk.

Here are a couple questions/concerns:

What is the end goal?
  • Are you trying to consolidate 2 V800s into 1?
  • Are you trying rebalance spindles across 2 V800s, and keep both online?

Do you have HP Support?
  • Will they generate new license keys for both V800s to reflect the new drive counts?
  • Will they perform the hardware config changes/moves?

Do you have enough free capacity to allow 96 spindles to be removed from the environment?

We are in need of those disks for the first V800 but it might be necessary in the future to move those disks to the second V800. We will use them also for rebalancing in the first V800 but this is not the main reason for them to be in the first V800. Both arrays should stay online for this operation. Those disks are required to accommodate new space requirements but step-by-step we should move some data flows to the second array and this is the reason we would like to move them, of course if it is possible and with minimum risk.
We do have HP support and they have been required to answer to this issue. They will definitely do this operation.
The big question is your last question and I cannot answer it. I don't know if there will be enough free space on the first array when I'll have to move them or when the space pressure on the second array will require those disks.
