Hi
We've a 3PAR 8400 currently running 3.3.1 MU2 (with about 6 patches installed) and I need to update to a later version. HPE have recommended 3.3.1 MU5 over 3.3.2 as it's an 8400 and this is the preferred OS version from HPE engineering. I have a couple of questions on this:

It states on the HPE download site that I should "Apply all available and applicable OS patches before beginning the update to 3.3.1 MU5". Does this mean just install any additional patches for 3.3.1 MU2 (that are yet installed) before going to MU5 GA or do I also need to apply and install all of 3.3.1 MU3?
I've calculated that I need to install about 16 x MU2 patches - that's a lot of work just to get me to a point where I can upgrade to MU5??
When I then get to MU5 it says to apply patches in the order they were released - mostly this is fine, but I've noticed a couple of patches that have a later P number but were released earlier. eg P146 has an earlier release date than P145 - so do I still install P145 before P146?

many thanks in advance

You do not need to install MU3 before MU5.

My recommendation would be to download all release notes and review them in reverse order to exclude all patches included in later patches. If system is calling home, Infosight will should do that job for you and present a list of usually no more than 5 patches.

If you don’t use File Persona, ignore those patches as they are fairly large.

Many thanks for the information.

So, I believe my approach should be:

Review the release notes of the 3.3.1 MU2 patches that need to be applied to the 3PAR
Only apply the 3.3.1 MU2 applicable to my environment (eg no File Persona fixes as we don't use this)
Then upgrade directly to 3.3.1 MU5
Apply patches (again, only those relevant to my environment)

Are the patches applied in patch number order or release date order?
eg 3.3.1 P146 released on 12/17/2020 and P145 released on 01/07/2021 - which should be applied first?

The important part is dependencies. For P145/P146 it doesn't matter.... not that it is relevant as P146 is included in P156 so you never need to install it
