Yeah, serialized backups are a cop out but if you've decided on DPM as your backup strategy then it's a work around, depending on the size of your environment.

I've had several customers where the hotfix helped and to be honest I haven't stumbled upon any references to it not working. I'm not saying there aren't any, just that I didn't know about it being a bigger issue than "apply hotfix".

As for the rest of your post, would it be ok with you if I took that part of the discussion over PM in order to keep the thread as on topic as possible?

Did your customers have ODX enabled? CSV backups worked for me with ODX disabled but with it enabled the cluster would go offline. I wanted to keep the feature enabled so looked for alternatives but actually I've since disabled it due to VM corruptions so I might look to go back to DPM again.
