Hi,
Does anyone manage to keep the snapshot of serial cable of HP 3PAR, to identify how it look like.
Also, what is the use and how to use the serial cable??

In case we are moving a HP 3PAR 7200 (with one disk expansion enc) from one rack to new rack then :
1) How does we should start mounting the HP 3PAR 7200 (Currently with 3.1.2), I mean Node enclosure should be in the bottom and then disk enclosure ? and keep all space free for future expansion?
2) When we move the 3PAR, before that a shut down of system is required and after that power ON> Can someone provide step by step procedure

You shouldn't need a console cable for this.
You can shut down the array from the sp.

The console cable they give you with the 3par is just a blue Ethernet cable. Then they give you a grey and a black converter for the serial port on your laptop. Imo they are useless though as the plastic casing stops you putting it into a serial port on a laptop. So I use a different one.

To find out how to do the move, I did a step by step guide in another thread. I'll try and find it.

Hi Davidkn,
Can you suggest what is the best way to do physical installation. I am doing this for 3PAR 7200 with DCN1 & DCS2.
In future there could be more upgrade as well for the storage. And as we know that in future we may go upto 9 cages with 3.1.3, so what is the best practice for physicall installation.
Putting the node enclosure in the bottom FF of rack and then disk enclosures after that? and keep free space available over the disk cage for future expansion.

controller at the top of the rack - and any disk shelves and room for all likely expansion below it. There are manuals for layout/racking and cabling for all combinations available - though perhaps not upto the 9 shelf limit of the 7200 yet - let alone for the 18 shelf limit of the 7400's.

Sorry, forgot to answer that part, but yes as above, the controller shelf goes at the top for a 7200.

Whether the controller node pairs live at the top or bottom of the set of chassis doesn't matter, as long as you:
a) start with the controller node pair,
b) add additional expansion chassis in one direction,
c) leave no gaps between chassis,
d) add new expansion chassis in the next available space beyond the farthest expansion chassis from a controller node pair.

If you want to go bottom-up or top-down, it doesn't matter much, just start with the controller node pair and pick which direction. Leave room beyond the last expansion chassis for additional expansion chassis. Don't put expansions on both top and bottom sides of a controller node pair.

The main reason for keeping everything close is because of the length of the SAS cabling between the units—they're relatively short cables. Leaving gaps between chassis would be detrimental because of the recabling efforts needed when expansions need to be installed. This is particularly bad if you're expecting to keep the array online with expansion.

For those with a 7400 or 7450 four-node configuration, they grow in both directions, so it's usually best to simply mount the controller nodes in the middle of the rack, as they grow both up and down, with each side's SAS cabling tied to a particular node pair.

While that may be true, every cabling guide has them going down with the controllers at the top, so by doing it the other way you are just opening yourself up to wrong cabling at some point along the way.

The most annoying one is when a consultant comes onsite to add shelves and the cabling diagram can't be used as it's all back to front, from experience this is REALLY difficult to visualise.

So to avoid any confusion now and in the future, I would advise following the coaling diagram and keeping the controllers at the top.

It is not possible to upgrade a 7200 to a 7400.

You have to start with a 2 node 7400 and then upgrade to a 4 node box.
