Post subject: | Storage vmotion from FC_r1 CPG to FC_r5 CPG |
Greetings I have a VMware environment attached to a 3par 7200 array. The array has 2 tiers, FC and SSD. My FC tier in particular I want to free some space by converting some of the VMDKs sitting on the FC_r1 cpg to the FC_r5 cpg. I believe to convert an entire cpg I can use setcpg and tunevv thereafter to convert the vv. I got that info here. viewtopic.php?f=18&t=2627(Change RAID type and name on CPGs) I am not interested in converting an entire VV or CPG, I simply want to use svmotion to move some VMDKs from FC_r1 to FC_r5 and then recover the space. I plan to do a svmotion from 1 datastore sitting on FC_r1 to a datastore sitting on FC_r5 and then running a compact cpg on the FC_r1 to reclaim the space. My question is will this work or will the LDs remain as RAID1? Also my assumption is that if I svmotion from SSD_r5 to FC_r5 and then run a compactcpg on the SSD_r5 cpg I will reclaim that space. Is my assumption correct? VMFS version 5.6 on all 3par datastores 3par Release version 3.2.2 (MU6) Patches: P99,P104,P107,P119 Thanks, 3par has quite a learning curve, apologies if these questions have been answered. |

Just to get the starting point of this discussion correct. Are you using vmware vvols? If not, are you using VMFS5 or VMFS6 on your datastores? |

Thanks for replying. No we are not using VVOLS. VMFS 5.6 is the version. |

*svmotion VMs to the new datastore * if you are able to empty a full datastore/volume om r1, you can unmount it in vmware and delete in on the 3PAR * if you're not able to empty a full datastore, you must run Vmwares unmap command on each datastore and wait for 3PAR to reclaim (this will take time... and you should get the latest patches for 3.2.2 MU6 as one of the latest patches (144 or 145 or something) constains some improvements *when the 3PAR has released the space (which is rather instant when deleting a volume and can take forever is you need to reclaim within a volume), you can do compactcpg. As you're speaking for LDs ... LDs are a part of the CPG. So all LDs containing data in FC_r5 CPG will be R5, and for FC_r1 they will be R1. |
