Hi.

I'm a 3par newbie, and going to install our new 7200 2-node system.

3 vmware esxi 5.1 hosts will be attached with FC.

Another windows physical host will be responsible for backups with Veeam software.

My question:
Can I export a VV in read/write mode to the vmware esxi hosts, but also export same VV to the backup host as read-only?

Thanks,
Yizhar

Quick glance, I do not see a method to export a LUN as read only. I think the 3PAR approvaed ($) method would be to use virtual copy to take a snapshot and use a tool to backup the snapshot.

That said, my Cisco SAN switches have the ability to create a read only zone, so I would be able to accomplish this requirement outside of the 3PAR stack, perhaps you may be able to as well.

Hi.

Thank you very much for the reply.

Backup from snapshot is planned for next Veeam version 7:

For current version I will choose later which approach to use -
maybe allow read write access for the backup server as I manage it myself,
or might use other approach.

VADP based backups of esx you need to be careful of, thee is a vmware paper on how to configure the Windows OS to make sure Windows does not try to signature the VMFS datastore.

Yeah, you just have to run diskpart and run the command "automount disable". That way the VMFS disks stay offline on your Veeam proxy. I'm actually running Veeam in this method and haven't had any problems thus far (knock on wood!).

Hi.

Well I have setup SAN mode on the backup server and it is working fine.
I didn't have to disable automount manualy as this is done by software anyway:

How to setup SAN access for use with Veeam Backup & Replication

It works fine now.
Thanks for all the fish.
