Post subject:  Where to go from a 7200c?

Good morning all.

Im working on some roadmap write ups for what we want to do once our 7200c 3PARs go end of life. Right now these units are pretty good for what we have but I'm curious if it makes sense to set our sights on the 8000 series.

For reference we have the following for both our sites:

2 shelves with 48 - 4tb NL drives
1 Shelf with 24 1.8tb FC drives (at our secondary site)
1 Shelf with 12 SSD drives and 12 FC drives (at our primary site)

We mainly use it for SQL, File storage and some other one offs.

Aside from more dedicated Flash for our SQL workloads I dont really know what else to consider. We currently use Remote Copy but may not continue with it in the future.

Any insight would be awesome. Thanks!

The direct path from a 7200c is the 8200.

If you're happy with what you got, start with that as an example. More flash increase performance and cost.

Yes or no to remote copyis usually more of a business decision than a technical one.

The 8200 is the right answer today, but HPe Discover is end of June. If there are any new product announcements to be made, that would be the time and the place!

Hi,

quite a few of our 8000 systems are out of support and we are in a similar situation.
The 8200/8400 does the job.

When asking HPE about a refresh they keep pointing us towards Nimble AF.

-NVMe SCM won't come to the 8000 Family.
-9450 is not priced towards the small-midrange.
-Possible smaller models in the 9000 Family?
? Will HPE move away from the Xyratex hardware platforms perhaps?
+ 32Gb Fibre Channel Arrived. ( we just got hosts with 16GB FC adapters )
- No high speed ethernet options yet
+ 12GB SAS still doesn't seem to be much of a bottleneck for the SSD drives.
? dual ported NVMe standards not ready for https://www.flashmemorysummit.com/English/Collaterals/Proceedings/2018/20180809_TEST-301A-1_Nadig.pdf

I might be missing something, but why not just extend the support?

There is no end-of-life announcement for 8k yet, so if they do the job, there isn't really any reason for doing a refresh just to do a refresh.

One of the 8200 has already had 3+1 year on it and now the price to renew 2 years is 50% of the system price.

Because years 5/6 get very expensive apparently.
The advise we received is to buy a new array with 4 years straight up.

I always recommend 5 years up-front for storage.

As soon as your environment gets a tiny bit complicated, your migration costs increase dramatically.

Remember that even if you are going to replace it now, you still need to have two systems running (and on support) during the migration period. The only thing that come close to storage migration on the "pain in the ass" scale is core switch replacement, which I why I tend to size core switches with 7 to 10 year life span.

In your calculations where 2 years extension = 50% of system price, does the system price include installation and migration cost to the new system?

Thanks for all the info everyone. I think this is a good starting place for me.

i would definitely keep an eye on the june hpe discover event. there is a strong possibility that they will have to announce some next gen to the 8k-9k line up. there are too many advancements from their competitor's tech refreshes for hpe to fall behind another year. using sizer tools with the current gen 3par it is far to easy to controller bind a config. current and near future drive tech will not be sustainable on their current cage/node generation.

we have many 7k's on our recap schedule prior to their eosl. i am waiting on announcements this year to see what we do.
