Hi all,

I have 3PAR1 and 3PAR2 which are in synchronous RCFC replication with Peer Persistant, I have active volume on both systems and I need to replace 3PAR1 with 3PAR3 (a brand new system)

My plan was the following:
- Put all the active VV on 3PAR2 doing switchover of remote copy groups
- Unexport destination VVs
- Stop all remote copy groups
- Delete remote copy / PP configuration on 3PAR2 and 3PAR1
- Create a new remote copy / PP configuration between 3PAR2 and 3PAR3
- Create remote copy groups to synchronize data on the new system
- Export destination VV

It worked pretty well for the VVs which were originally active on 3PAR2 but it didn't for the VVs are were originally active on 3PAR1 because I had to switchover them.

As far as I know, in a peer persistant configuration, active VVs are exported through active VLUNs with a target portal group ID of 257 and replicas are exported through standby VLUNs with a target portal group ID of 258.

What I haven't expected, is that when you do a switchover, destination VLUNs become active but target portal group ID is still 258.

So I'm now in a configuration where my source VVs are exported through active VLUNs with a target portal portal group ID of 258. The problem is when I try to export the destination VVs, they are exported through standby VLUNs with a target portal portal group ID of 258 too.

From the host point of view, paths on both 3PAR systems are seen as Active/Optimized even if half of them if active and the other half is standy from the 3PAR point of view. This leads to very poor performance, servers are unusable.

Does anyone of you do know how I can get out of this mess ?

Thanks,

Edit:
Hosts are Windows 2012 Hyper-V Clusters
3PARs are 3.2.2MU4 StoreServ 8200
Remote copy groups have path_management policy enabled

Tricky, I've not tried this but you can manually change the TPGID number.

Please test well. ;)

1) Switchover to 3PAR2
2) Unexport from 3PAR1
3) Remove from Rcopy Groups
4) Use "setvv -settpgid 1 <vvname>" (sets it back to default for a non PP volume)
5) Rescan hosts, hope they still happy and see the ID change
6) Mirror to 3PAR3 and repeat 1-5 to have the source on 3PAR3 then mirror back

There are also some extra rcopy commands related to permanently switching the volume home from one array to another which might work but not something I've had to play with in many years (and not used since using PP so I've not seen what they do with ID change).

Hi,

Thanks for your answer.

Here is the workaround provided by HPE support:

1/Make sure Path Management policy is enabled on the RC Groups
2/Unexport destination VVs
3/Dismiss all the VVs from the RC Group using the -keepsnap option for faster resync
4/Change the TPGID to 257 on the destination volume using setvv -settpgid 257 vvname
5/Admit in the RC Group all the VVs previously dismissed
admitrcopyvv sourcevvname:snapname RCGroupname Target:destinationvvname
6/Once it is synced, export destination volume

Worked very well without any downtime

Cool, sounds like a more direct approach.
