Hello, We have a 4-node 3PAR 8440. We are showing a power supply 0 fan failure, but SSMC is showing that fan 1 is red instead of 0. Shouldn't fan 0 be red instead? We also attempted to replace power supply 0 and it gave an error about the power supply being unsupported, even though the model number of the replacement was correct. As a result, we put the old power supply back in before any overheating could occur. Thanks for any input.

Okay. So SSMC is saying fan1 error. What is saying fan0 ? What does "showcage -d" in CLI say? Are you running a current firmware (on the system/cages)? |

Do you have an active support contract? I have a bad feeling someone needs to dig deep into some logs here. I'm assuming that installing any working power supply from somewhere else in the system will cause the same error. In that case you probably have a faulty cage (mid-plane), IFC or both. Replacing a cage is a little more than rip and replace. At least if you care to keep the system online. |

We don't have a support contract with HP. We do have one with a 3rd party but it's hardware only. We were hoping the power supply that we had ordered may have just been bad so we've ordered a couple more in the off chance that one will work. My initial confusion came from the discrepancy in SSMC when it said that PS 0 fan had failed but it showed fan 1. One question I have : Does each PCM have one fan or two? Because it lists PS0 with Fan 0 and Fan 1, and PS1 with Fan 0 and Fan 1 which makes me think there's a total of 4 fans per cage (2 in each PS). |

SSMC also lists failed fan in both PSUs so that makes me think either cosmic glitch in SSMC or most likely something more in the logs than what is presented. I’m pretty sure you’re right about the number of fans per PSU. If there was only one and it failed, your PSU would be toast right now due to heat. You can easily eliminate your theory on getting a failed PSU by tryinga working one from another cage. |

An update on this. When the tech initially replaced PS0, he got an error in SSMC about the power supply being unsupported. However, this also triggered an alert in SSMC that PS1 was also unsupported. Is that normal? When he put the old PS back into slot 0, the PS1 error resolved itself. We have ordered two more tested and verified functional power supplies to attempt replacing PS0 again but I wanted to mention that one bit of info. Assuming the issue remains, we will have to look into cage replacement. We don't have enough spare space to relocate all the chunklets to the other 3 cages in the array, so it will be interesting. |

If you insert a PSU that isn't identical as the other installed PSU it will be listed as unsupported. So if PS0 was different from PS1, then PS1 would start complaining. One option for cage replacement is to add a new cage, move drives one by one or in pairs and dismiss the "failed" cage in the end. |

We ended up replacing PS0 with a verified/tested PSU and the errors went away. All green for fans in SSMC and the showcage command lists all fan speeds as "low". I did confirm there are two fans per PSU. I still have my suspicions so I'm keeping an eye on it but so far so good. Thank you for the assistance. |
